AfriComNet is partnering with universities and training institutions in Eastern and Southern Africa to develop and offer courses in strategic communication for health and development. Each year, AfriComNet brings together all the university partners to share and review course materials, share implementation challenges, and develop work plans for the next year.

The 2011 Universities meeting was held from 28 – 30th March, 2011, at the Top Tower Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda. The meeting was attended by 31 participants from twelve universities including The National University of Rwanda, Muhimbili University, Tanzania, University of Nairobi and Moi University, Kenya, Jimma University, Ethiopia, Makerere University Uganda (and Mildmay Uganda), University of Malawi, University of Namibia, University of Zambia, Stellenbosch University, South Africa, Ohio University, The Johns Hopkins University. This year’s meeting was sponsored by the ROADS Project, the C-Change Project, and UNESCO. Participants from Tanzania and Malawi were sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University.

The objectives of this meeting were:
- to share new and existing course materials among universities
- to identify challenges involved in the implementation of the program and possible solutions
- to identify technical support requirements for the universities and steps needed to institutionalize the short courses into the universities’ diploma and degree program curricula
- to discuss topical areas for new course development
- to develop a work plan for 2011/2012
- to orient university partners to the C-Change Project/Ohio University online Social and Behavior Change Communication toolkit and e-learning course and identify mechanisms for incorporating it into the AfriComNet/Universities’ program
