| President seeks $5.4 billion
for PEPFAR in 2008 budget
The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief continues
in its fifth year to fight the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. More
than three million people died of AIDS related illnesses in
2005; of these, more than 500,000 were children.
The 2008 Budget requests an additional $5.4 billion for the
fight against global AIDS. As of September 30, 2006, the President's
Emergency Plan has supported antiretroviral treatment for
more than 822,000 men, women, and children through bilateral
programs in the 15 focus countries. More than 805,000 of those
being supported live in Sub-Saharan Africa.
