- Communicating with Policymakers about Population
and Health. This course is designed for researchers,
program managers, and other professionals working
in population and health. The course is designed
to increase the use of research findings to improve
population and health policies and programs and
to help participants communicate research findings
with policy makers. Participants will learn about
the policy process, practice different methods for
describing research findings in non technical languages,
and learn about strategic design, working with the
media, and preparing good written and oral presentations.
- Use of discrete-time survival models to draw out
the policy implications of demographic and health
surveys. Participants will learn how to analyze
large survey data and to apply innovative multivariate
statistical methods to marriage and fertility data.
This course is designed for researchers actively
engaged in the analysis of DHS data. Participants
should have a good understanding and experience
with multiple regression and logit regression, at
least one statistical programming package, and some
familiarity with the convention Cox proportional
hazards model.
More information about both of these courses and
the application process are attached. Interested candidates
should apply as soon as possible. The deadline for
applications is December 31, 2007. All costs for the
8 selected participants, including airfare, will be
covered by Macro International. The courses run from
3 June to 3 July 2008. Participants will be housed
in dormitories at the University of Hawaii and will
receive health insurance and a daily living allowance.
The ideal applicants for these two courses are university
graduates who use DHS findings on the job for research,
program design, advocacy, and monitoring and evaluation.
Macro International’s objective in supporting
this training is to increase use of DHS data for multiple
purposes.
