MTh in Practical Theology:
Clinical Pastorate & MTh
in Practical Theology: Clinical Pastorate – HIV Ministry
and Counselling
The MTh Clinical Pastorate and the MTh HIV/AIDS are hosted
by the Faculty of Theology and deals with a combination of
Psychology and Theology. The courses integrate pastoral
theory (Theology) and practice (clinical setting) and thus
aim at fostering an interdisciplinary approach between pastoral
care and counselling and the discipline of psychology/psychiatry.
Through exposure to different clinical settings and practical
work under supervision, students develop counselling and listening
skills and a pastoral sensitivity in care and counselling.
The courses include academic as well as clinical work, structured
supervision, oral and written exams, verbatims, assignments,
and case studies.
With the MTh in Practical
Theology: Clinical Pastorate the emphasis
is on counselling within different settings, with the main
focus on suffering (theodicy), different kinds of crises,
spirituality and the human quest for meaning, and hospital
care. Internships are done at government hospitals and
institutions. The purpose of the programme is to integrate
pastoral theology with praxis theory.
The MTh in Practical Theology:
Clinical Pastorate – HIV Ministry and Counselling differs
from the general course as it includes a research thesis and
as internships are done at government clinics and hospitals
dealing specifically with HIV/AIDS. The MTh HIV/AIDS is one
of the newest courses offered by the Faculty of Theology and
was born out of a growing need to equip students with a skills
set relevant to the needs of our context – specifically when
considering the massive HIV/AIDS pandemic that has become
a global challenge.
