USAID's history goes back to the Marshall
Plan reconstruction of Europe after World
War Two and the Truman Administration's
Point Four Program. In 1961, the Foreign
Assistance Act was signed into law and USAID
was created by executive order.
Since that time, USAID has been the principal
U.S. agency to extend assistance to countries
recovering from disaster, trying to escape
poverty, and engaging in democratic reforms.

President Bush launched the U.S. President's
Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)
to combat global HIV/AIDS - the largest
commitment by any nation to combat a single
disease in history.
Through the Emergency Plan, the U.S. Government
is working with international, national
and local leaders worldwide to support integrated
prevention, treatment and care programs.

The Johns Hopkins University/Center for
Communication Programs (CCP) is a pioneer
in the field of strategic, research-based
communication for behavior change and health
promotion that has helped transform the
theory and practice of public health. CCP
was established at the Johns Hopkins University
School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1988
in recognition of the proven importance
of communication in public health programs
and in keeping with the leadership role
the Johns Hopkins University has played
in this field.

The ROADS
project is designed to reduce HIV transmission,
improve care, and reduce the impact of
HIV and AIDS along major transport corridors
in East Africa namely Burundi, Democratic
Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia,
Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme
on HIV/AIDS, is an innovative joint venture
of the United Nations family, bringing together
the efforts and resources of ten UN system
organizations in the AIDS response to help
the world prevent new HIV infections, care
for people living with HIV, and mitigate
