Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, December 6, 2011. Four of the Seven Awards given at the 5th Annual Awards for Excellence in HIV/AIDS communication in Africa went to South African initiatives.
Scrutinize, from Johns Hopkins Health Education in South Africa won in the Multichannel category, Dream2Be Peer Education Program by Salesian Life choices won in the interpersonal/community category, Red and RedChatZone by Cell Life won in the New/Social Media category, and First Things First, by Foundation for Professional Medicine won in the Mass media category.

Other winners included the Nigerian TV and Radio series Bayelsan Silhouettes, by Shell Petroleum Production Company, in the HIV and AIDS related series category and The “Silkee” Female Condom promotion program by Population Services International, Lesotho, in the Social Marketing category.
This year’s Award ceremony was held in Addis Ababa Ethiopia and was attended by over 100 people, most of them part of the I6th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA).
The Chairman’s Award went to Dr. Negussie Teferra, of Ethiopia’s Population Media Center for his outstanding contribution to improving HIV and Family planning/reproductive programming through communication in Ethiopia.
46 Initiatives from 13 countries across Africa were received for the 2011 Annual Awards. The winners will present their initiatives on Thursday 8, 2011 at a satellite session at the ICASA conference.
